AbstractA background survey of the different methodologies used in specialized teaching of French is essential. Firstly, because we think that there is not enough theory in this respect, and secondly, because the use of up to date methodological mechanisms has to necessarily be based on the knowledge regarding previous research in this field and later development. This article is divided into two parts. The first part offers a panorama of the French functional teaching irruption. The second tackles the study of the four methodological stages, which have provided the guidelines for the teaching process ever since the beginning.
